This stuff^ but also try to step forward after the hook. It will help you land the headshot on your target.

a little bit damage before hooking will secure that one shot kill...so Left or right click(depending on range)+hook+left click+melee=sure shot kill

The bigger question was does his right click not do damage until it explodes? Because if it does damage before exploding, one would think having all the projectiles in a ball would be the better option, as there would be less spread.

Jonathan Howard, another good tip is to use your melee to bait out genji deflects and tracer blinks. The melee looks a lot like hog is throwing his hook, so it usually works.
