My kids aged 8 and 13 are loving this game. My husband and I are also in love with this game. It has more to do than Minecraft with tasks and quests it doesn’t get boring because there is always more to do. So much fun

Not sure about your son's reading level, but there's a lot of dialogue that moves the story along. If that isn't an issue I'd say definitely get it! It's my favorite switch game!!
