Pro tip: always fix TV mounts, wall shelves, or anything that will bear a load into a stud in the wall. They're easy to find, and the beauty part of this is, if the thing falls, the thing is the least of your actual worries.

You can find studs in the wall by either using a stud finder, or a powerful magnet. The magnet will be attracted to the nails already in the studs holding the sheetrock, so you'll be accurate 100% of the time.

If you did mount to a stud and this happened, congratulations, your structural integrity is bad and you should fix that before your whole house comes down.
