I may be late to the party, but in splatoon I’m currently looking up how to get these super snail currencies and it’s talking about splatfest. I’m trying to read about splatfest but it doesn’t make sense to me. Is it a monthly event in ranked or something? Anyone got a quick explanation of when they are and how it works?

It's a monthly turf war. They will announce it a week before the next splatfest.

They happen once a month, you’ll get told in-game when one is coming up. Then you go to the terminal and pick a side, and get a t-shirt which you have to wear during the Splatfest, then you lose it after that. During the Splatfest it’s only turf war, and the amount of snails you get depends on the rank you get in the Splatfest by earning points.
