I’m looking to upgrade my cpu from i5 7500. My motherboard only supports up to 7th gen 7700k, is it worth it to buy a new motherboard that supports 8th gen or just go with the 7700k?

Running a 1070 8gb

If you’re mostly gaming no need to.

7th gen has been great for gaming

If You're gaming and finding you want a bit more CPU power the 7700k would be perfect for you tbh. No need to go 8th gen unless you really need the extra cores

If you plan on running a 1080 Ti/Next gen XX80 at 1440p, I would consider the 8700k, but probably stick with the 7700k unless you're planning on streaming a lot. 1080 Ti/XX80 with 4k, 7700k. If you're keeping your 1070, just stick with the 7700k.

I was just after some power that would cover me for a couple years

The 7700k is gonna be fine for a while, it's barely a year old.

The 7700k will be more than enough for you. The only reason to upgrade is if you stream/video editing or other workstation tasks
