Here's a question, has anybody ever hosted online tournaments were the participants paid an entrance fee of say $5 through something like PayPal and at the end of the tournament prizes would be awarded to the top 10 finishers?

Yes, that has been done with the previous iteration. Everything was secured and the winner was paid
