Pretty sure there isn't a preferred way to play, it just depends on the current situation in which mode you have to play your switch on. I know people won't play handheld if the TV isn't being used since playing docked does make it look and run a bit better.

I don't have a preference. I'm just happy that I can play my game. I play however is more convenient. If I'm laying in bed and I wanna handheld or docked if my girlfriend isn't using the TV. I'll play table top right beside her if she's playing on the TV or in handheld. I play in whats most comfortable to enjoy the games I love.
