What is the definition of a time zone?
A time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.

How do the time zones work?

The scientists used this information to divide the planet into 24 sections or time zones. Each time zone is 15 degrees of longitude wide. ... Longitude is the angular distance between a point on any meridian and the prime meridian at Greenwich. The time at Greenwich is called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Time zones in the US were also largely dictated by train routes. Which is why in northern Indiana, I'm on EST but TN below me is mostly on CST. Because Chicago to Nashville was a popular route and they wanted clear arrival and departure times.
