Watchmen 2 Season 5 free bonus good, but distracting

Overwatch 2 is in a tough spot. Gameplay-wise, the Season 5 update is a mix of popular and divisive changes. While the single-shot hit tweaks for Hanzo and Black Lily are long overdue - especially for those at high competitive levels - the reintroduction of CC for Cassidy and Mei is proving to be a nightmare for tanks. Season 5 also looks tedious as far as new content is concerned, an even harder pill to swallow after the recent news about PvE. Players can prepare enough Overwatch 2 Coins in the game.

While it makes some clever improvements to Watchpoint Gibraltar and the returning On Fire system, and there are some exciting event modes like Prop Hunt, Overwatch 2's fifth season doesn't have any major additions. Blizzard broke its promise to position each season between map and new hero releases, as Season 5 lacked new maps or new heroes. This is likely because Season 6 will be the biggest content drop in the game's history, making the season feel like the calm before the storm. Because of this, all of the free goodies coming online feel less generous and more like an attempt to keep players engaged in the face of a lack of content.

Watch Dogs 2's free content is great in its own right

To be clear, it's certainly a good thing that Watch Dogs 2 Season 5 offers players a lot of free goodies. At launch, the game came under fire for having little to no free unlockable content, and Blizzard has been slowly improving on that. Seasonal events have started to offer better free rewards like skins, and Blizzard is taking things to the next level with its Season 5 freebies.

Right now, Overwatch 2 players can complete some of the Battle Pass XP challenges, and if they complete enough of them, they'll earn 1,500 points for free. That's more than enough for most of the legendary skins in the hero library, essentially allowing players to choose any non-store skin they want. On June 20 and July 4, respectively, players will be able to get Sprinter Tracer and Sprinkles Mei , two popular damage hero designs, for free from the Item Store. a compassion-themed weapon charm will also drop during June 27.

The free skin drop will continue in July, when players can unlock the beach-themed Tropical Doom Iron Fist for the 2023 Summer Olympics. Another free skin will be unlocked during Magic & Mischief, aka Prop Hunt, and recolored in gold and red as Ana's Bastet costume. To top it all off, the June and July Twitch Prime bundles will give players 5 Battle Pass level jumps and Conductor Reinhardt skins, while the same month's Twitch Drops will offer 4 skins and 5+ level jumps. As if that wasn't enough, August will see players unlock Sojourn-based cosmetics to accompany her new Watchmen 2 animated short.

With context, Watch Dogs 2's free content doesn't feel like a goodwill gesture

All of this content is excellent and deserves to be celebrated to some degree. After all, this is the closest this game has come to the original Watch Dogs as far as free cosmetic unlocks are concerned. However, the timing of this free content makes it hard not to think about the real purpose it serves: to distract people from the current state of Watch Dogs 2.

The removal of the hero mode and talent tree, as well as the decision to make Watch Dogs 2 players pay for permanent story mission access, led to a boycott, with several large content creators dropping out of the game. Season 5 also felt emptier than any previous season, as the captivating Questwatch Battle Pass and creator mode were all that was to be done at launch. While Season 6 looks to be an exciting time for Questwatch 2, Season 5 is anything but, with community morale currently at an all-time low. So while the various freebies are welcome and should become the norm going forward, it's hard not to feel like this is just a distraction from the PvE situation and the lack of playable content in Season 5.
