Sorry completely new to switch. Should I be aware of particular safety controls to set online against other players my young son mentioned during inviting someone to join his Minecraft someone swore at him I’m confused can messages be typed if there’s no audio he blocked them but is this common or is he supposed to only play people he knows in person

Pretty much any online game without a blocker built in is gonna have people swearing on it. There isn't a profanity filter built into minecraft, but you might be able to find servers run by people who ban anyone that swears.
There might be a way to disable chat completely in minecraft, though. I haven't played the switch version of it, but you can just check the options menu in game. Stuff like that is gonna be different on every game
