People don't say it's for nerds. They say it's for kids. Mostly because so much of Nintendo's marketing strategy for the west back in the NES days was convincing people that it was a toy and not a game console. This strategy was needed to reverse the effects of the videogame market crash, but has ironically left them with the kiddie reputation they still have today.
