I cheated and spawned mine in to check them out lol, but yes in scorched earth I heard that you only get 5 mins to knock them out before they disappear

They don't actually disappear from what Iv heard they reduce to an ash pile that can still be found outside of a heatwave and 're engerised through fire. This is from what Iv read but I'd imagine the ash pile isn't easy to find. They also stay stuck to a person who's already started taming but that could be a bug.
