mostly likely they tried, then in testing they looked either stupid or gaudy and couldn't find a good way to make shaders look good with swords

Considering I've only seen like 4 different models of swords, aside from the class specific ones, everything would just start looking the same..

Some swords are literally the same design and model, just different colour..
