In case you have an old pc (pentium 90 and below I'd say) then you can run Doom in a demo mode to calculate your frames per second. I never knew about it back in the day.
I saw Philscomputerlab do this before and then read about it in an old copy of PC Zone magazine I have. So I made a video last month with my compaq 486 to measure how many fps it could generate (less than I thought).
