Unless you are planning of OCing the 7700k to +4.8Ghz you wont see a big difference in gaming.

any upgrading from i5 to i7 (in the same generation or later) is worth it...even 8600k to 8700k..if the gain is not big today it will be 2 years from now...the 8600k will fall abit behind while the 8700k will still be great

my binned 6700k was better than a 7700k i wanted to upgrade to, i just ordered an 8700k... going to find out if its single core performance is any better, wish me luck.

It is and isn't. The 7700k will be a better cpu longer than the i5 just because of the 8 threads, but if you was really upgrading and had the money I would go with the newest platform.
