Alienware 17 - on boot, says hard drive failed to boot. Advice?

If you have a bootable Linux drive lying around you could try to see if that recognizes the hdd and you can at least cross bad drive off the list

My developer drive boots, my hard drive doesn't. I took apart and made sure connections are good. It still says 'check cable' though.

first, try another sata cable, if that doesnt work the hard drive may have gone toast
