Looking at purchasing either a i7-7700k or the 8700k but ima newb when it comes to OC,care to share tips/do's and dont's of the trade?Also,what are some safe OC numbers for both chips so i wont push them too hard.

There's more to think about than just overclocking. You're comparing a 4 core to a 6 core. And Kabylake runs generally hot, so you would need sufficient cooling with overclocking. And while there is an average safe overclock, two chips aren't exactly the same. While one chip can make it to 3.9 (example), the other may only be able to get 3.7 (example).

Do:
Your research into the specific processor you end up buying to see what the minimums and maximums are with your specific cooling solution

Take things very slowly and gradually increase the clock speed

Don't:
Be in a hurry to hit 5ghz
