Just out of curiosity, what would give better performance? Higher resolution with lower graphics settings? Or lower resolution with higher graphics settings?

Ah. I would suppose the lower resolution with the higher graphics setting would require less gpu power.

The amount of power required to apply graphical magic like AA etc, is directly effected by the number of pixels on screen. In the simplest terms doing something in1080p will take the GPU roughly a quarter processing it would have to do for the same in 4K, leading to much higher framerates. As increasing the res will lead to other bottlenecks (memory etc) you will almost always get better performance with a low res / more effects approach.
