In xenoblade 2 from common crystals all i get is the weird robot looking dogs/people. Are all common cores that pattern/design or is it just because i am not even to rescuing the cat girl from execution?

All common blades look like that. I think there might be chance of a rare blade from a common core but I'm not sure so someone correct me!
Rare blades are much more unique looking.

If you obtain 99 Common Core Crystals, and then used them consecutively, I'd estimate that you'd acquire 2-5 Special or Unique Blades.

Otherwise, get used to the "Generic" or useful Merc Blades is how I would label them.

Try rare core crystals or legendary if you have them, much higher chance or a rare blade

It’s RNG although Rare and Legendary give you better chances.

When I was where you were at, I got nothing but common but once I got Nia back, got a rare after 2 cores.
