They didn't lie as they aren't wiping them, they are closing servers that are costing them money by not having enough players on them, uploading the server files of the servers they are taking down for those that want the files to play themselves or host the server themselves, and then opening NEW servers for release. This is 100 times better than what most developers do upon release and during alpha/beta stages which is wipe multiple times before release and at release.

This is a good thing, those servers had 0-5 people on them at a time anyway. No company in the world would pay to keep up empty servers forever.
