When I first join server I build alittle base on beach while I grind for a few weeks than I move in and make bases along the way kinda like markers so I know we're I'm at aha

I like to have 1 main one and 1 back up that is almost as defended.

I do a few small hidden bases. That way I never lose everything at once.

In PvP I usually have one small base, but constantly change location. In pve I usually have a couple across the map (with the amount being based on how many players there are, so I leave building space for others. )

Got the main base above, hatchery below. Tough to get everything you need in one space.
